To-do List When Moving Home

Moving to a new home is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. A well-organised plan is key to ensuring a smooth transition. Use this comprehensive to-do list to guide you through every step of the moving process, from preparing your current home to settling into your new one.

Four Weeks Before

• Order boxes and packing materials.

• Clear out unwanted items; donate, freecycle, or take to the tip.

• Declutter your attic, garage and shed.

Two Weeks Before

Notify these providers and services of your move:

• Utilities (gas, electricity, water, broadband, TV and phone).

• Council Tax, TV Licensing and Post Office redirection.

• Financial services (bank, credit cards, loans and DVLA).

• Doctor, dentist, gym, subscriptions and workplace.

 

One Week Before

• Empty and defrost the freezer.

• Pack all non-essential items.

• Confirm removals company or van hire.

• Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day.

Two Days Before

• Finalise key arrangements with the estate agent.

• Get alarm codes for the new home if needed.

• Pack remaining items and remove lights or curtains you’re taking.

The Big Day

• Record final meter readings.

• Switch off power and water if the home will be empty.

• Lock all windows and doors, leaving keys in plain sight.

• Drop off keys at the estate agent.
